City Tower is a symbol of Rijeka on which a city clock has been situated since the 17th century. It was built in the Middle Ages on the foundations of the Late Ancient littoral town doors with richly decorated portal, an imperial coat of arms carved out of stone and a relief of the Austrian emperors Leopold and Charles VI.

The passage by the tower leads to Rijeka’s Old Town which once was the original entrance to the Roman settlement Tarsatica ...as a main door of the fortified town and was locked at night.

The double-headed eagle situated on top of the tower’s turret has its own history since after the First World War Italian soldiers chopped off one head to make it less similar to the Austrian eagle and more like the Roman one. It was then completely removed after the Second World War. But now is back after 68 years!
